Say NO to Aqua on 1st Peking Road

I seldom post my blog in English but this time I will like to spread BAD words of mouth to English readers regarding how bad dining experience could be in Aqua on 1st Peking Road.

Last Thursday, February 26 2009 was Pink Lady’s birthday. She came to Hong Kong to celebrate her birthday with me. After work, I met her in her hotel in TST and went to Aqua on 29/30 Floors, 1st of Peking Road for dinner. Before we moved into the restaurant, the waitress told us the minimum charge per person is 380 HKD.

Aqua serves both Italian and Japanese food. That night Pink Lady and I would like to have Japanese food. So we ordered Skew Combo, Standard Sushi and Seafood Hotpot. They are all very tasty. I was very happy and thinking about to bring my parents to this restaurant when they visit me to enjoy the great food and dining experience. Although both of us were full, we ordered a chocolate cake for dessert because without a cake you can not really say you celebrate a birthday. The cake was hand-made after order. Very delicious. I can not stop sending the cake into my mouth until it was gone.

Everything seems wonderful. But after hopping on the shuttle bus, my stomach started aching. Once I arrived home, it was not just simple gassy. Severe diarrhea began. I occupied the toilet. Left. Took a rest and return to the bathroom…

I called Pink Lady to see whether she has the same symptoms as me. She did not answer her cell. So I text-messaged her to inform her of my home number. In case she has very bad diarrhea, she could reach me.

On Friday morning, I found Pink Lady was just like me last night and when she walked me to the shuttle and said Goodbye to me, her stomach started running at that moment. In conclusion, we got food poisoning. Dinner was the only meal we had together and after that both of us did not eat anything.

I called the manager of Aqua. Unfortunately, it was lunch time and the manager was very busy. The waitress took my name and phone number and promise the manager will call me back. Around 6 p.m., the manager called. He was quite professional that he found our bill out to see what we ordered. He was very clear about what we had last night. He first apologized and tell me that you guys ordered …. We served these dishes to other table as well but we did not receive any complaint so far. I also check the kitchen. No problem occurred.”

I was even more upset after hearing what he explained because no complaint does not mean there is no problem. The manager only said they will treat us as special guests next time. I was very angry because this was the worst experience I have ever had. I will never go to this restaurant again. I have never had such bad diarrhea after dining outside. Thus it was not only me. Pink Lady had the same symptoms. We could ask for minimum food safety at average tea restaurants. How come a meal cost 1,000 HKD could not meet the basic standard? I asked for full refund and the manager said he will think about it and gave me a call.

We did not receive any return call. Pink Lady was not very happy, either. Before she left Hong Kong, she called Food and Health Bureau (24 hours Complaint Hotline: Complaint Hotline (852) 28680000). She also called Aqua for an answer. Before this blog posted, no return call.

Hi Chiajin, thanks for publishing this article in English, for public health's concern!!! I will spread the words on traveler's blogs and tell the Langham Hotel (cross the street from the Aqua)'s concierge this story too. So the world travelers who plan to visit HK will not encounter the bad experience we had on my b-day! I am very upset that the Aqua manager didn't call me back before I left HK (though the restaurant staff promised to). I didn't mention anything about the refund. what I really need was an apology. Can anyone imagine a supposedly awesome 30th b-day night was the busy travel to the toilet? Aqua, is not just bad for the public health, it is also bad on serving customers and crisis management!

I have to show my respect to the efficiency of HK government. Food and Health Bureau called me on the the first working day after Pink Lady's complaint for more information. This morning I received another follow-up call which told me that the Bureau has already checked the kitchen of Aqua and found out the hygiene satisfactory but the temperature of their fridge does not meet the standard.

不得不佩服香港政府有效率,打完電話過後的第一個工作日,就有人打電話來問我詳細狀況。今天(2009/3/11),不到兩星期之後,我又接到電話,話筒另一端跟我報告說他已經去檢查過Aqua的廚房,發現廚房的衛生狀況satisfatory,但是冰箱溫度未達標準。

Thanks for the publishing this. I had the same bad experience, poor customer service,plus we were rushed to leave..very disappointed their services totally. so I never ever going back there again.
